Early Life and Rise in Business:
- Born in Scotland in 1835, Carnegie immigrated to Allegheny, Pennsylvania, with his family in 1848 in search of better economic opportunities.
- He began working at age thirteen as a bobbin boy in a cotton mill and later moved through various jobs, including messenger at the telegraph office and positions with Western Union and the Pennsylvania Railroad.
- His keen business acumen and ability to make shrewd investments led him to accumulate wealth early on. He invested in iron and oil companies and the Adams Express company, and later secured a share in a sleeper car company, all while rising through the ranks of the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Building the Steel Empire:
- In 1865, Carnegie resigned from the railroad to establish his own businesses, and by the 1870s, he entered the steel industry.
- He founded the Carnegie Steel Company, a dominant force in the American steel industry, known for adopting innovative technologies like the Bessemer process and later the open-hearth furnace.
- Carnegie implemented a vertically integrated business model, owning raw material sources, transportation, and production facilities, which significantly boosted efficiency and profitability.
- By 1889, the Carnegie Steel Corporation was the largest of its kind globally.
Transition to Philanthropy:
- In 1901, Carnegie sold his immensely successful Carnegie Steel Company to J.P. Morgan, forming the basis for U.S. Steel Corporation.
- After selling his company, Carnegie devoted the rest of his life to philanthropic endeavors, giving away over $350 million.
- His philanthropy focused on various causes, including establishing thousands of public libraries, funding educational institutions like Carnegie Mellon University, and promoting peace through organizations like the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
